Rare Chemistry : Redefining Evolving Skincare Landscape Rituals in India

Dr Neeta Kapadia & Rhea Kapadia, Co-FoundersThe Indian skincare market has expanded manifold in the past decade, evolving from a niche category to a mainstream essential. What was previously viewed as pampering is now an integral part of personal well-being. This change has been pushed by growing awareness, international exposure, and a generation of well-informed consumers who realize that skincare is not merely about beauty but about sustaining the well-being of the body’s largest organ.

Still, even with this change, Indian consumers tend to have special complications. Climatic diversity, differences in humidity levels, and the broad range of skin tones and types are some of the factors that make it challenging to depend on generic, worldwide solutions. A recurring issue in this growing market is the absence of compatibility among products. Buyers are often lured by top-selling products from various brands, only to discover that these mixtures conflict when combined.

This results in confusion, inconsistency, and some times even negative outcomes, leaving customers frustrated and hesitant to try further. It is exactly this space that Rare Chemistry discovered its niche as an Indian skincare brand conceived through the aspiration to rationalize, individualize, and ritualize skincare as a local phenomenon.

A Mother-Daughter Duo Blending Rituals with Science

Rare Chemistry was started by ophthalmologist and surgeon Dr Neeta Kapadia and her daughter Rhea during the pandemic years. For Rhea, who was studying fashion communication in her last year of undergraduate studies, the instability of those years provided an opportunity to think and follow a lifelong affinity towards skin care.

Raised around habitual skincare rituals by her mother and grandmother, she knew that skincare was not about luxury but about ritual. This personal dilemma became the starting point for a brand that delivered cohesiveness at each stage of the skincare process. Her mother, Dr Neeta, introduced a cross-pollination of tradition and science to the enterprise.
Her experience as a surgeon in the hospital and her own history of natural treatments entailed a philosophy where ‘inspiration from nature meets innovation through science’. Talking about the philosophy, Dr Neeta Kapadia frequently says, “Skincare should have the same calming effect on the skin that meditation has on the mind”.

Rhea’s contribution, on the other hand, was to adapt this philosophy for a digitally connected younger audience. Her love for skincare started with a fascination for makeup She focused on the importance of skincare for emotional health, understanding rituals as self-care rather than duty. Her guiding mantra was, “Be real, be rare because true beauty comes from daily kindness to oneself”. What makes it stand out in the saturated Indian market is its determination to build synergistic product lines.

Rather than promoting long 10-step routines, the brand curates stream lined rituals for four different skin types dry to normal, oily, combination, and sensitive. Whether it be cleansers, toners, moisturizers, eye creams, and scrubs or groundbreaking launches such as India’s first digital sunscreen, Rare Chemistry sees to it that each product works in harmony with the other. The digital sunscreen, especially is a trailblazer that shields skin from both UVA and UVB rays and also from the blue light of laptops, mobiles, and televisions a must-have for these screen filled days.

Rare Chemistry is not just about better skin, it is about building rituals that nurture confidence, kindness, and a rare sense of self-worth

Collaboration, Empowerment & Consumer Trust

Its power isn’t just in its founders, but in the diverse, collaborative team behind the brand. Close to 80 percent of its employees are women, a testament to its empowerment agenda. From formulation specialists and dermatology advisors to Rhea-led creative storytelling teams, women dominate the team that forms and shapes both the science and the soul of the brand.

Their formulator, who is also a doctor, closely collaborates with Dr Neeta Kapadia to make sure every ingredient is multi-targeted safe and efficient. Transparency has been a foundation of Rare Chemistry. All raw materials are obtained from certified suppliers, products are free from cruelty, paraben-free, and dermatologically tested, while packaging is strongly in favor of sustainable glass over plastic.

For Dr Neeta Kapadia, the personal touch is paramount, and she only develops products she would be comfortable using on her own daughter. One of its earliest milestones was during their first ever exhibition at The Little Flea in Mumbai, when actor and doctor bought their products anonymously.
